Rare £1 coin with ‘error’ worth £2,500 – and you could have one in your pockets

Rare coins that are now worth a small fortune in 2020

Everyone knows how important it is to check your coin collection.

Although the Royal Mint often launches a variety of pieces, it’s the designs from a few years ago which are worth owning. The Kew Gardens 50p coin is usually the one every collector fancies in their possession.

Even other rare coins could make you a millionaire, including a 1p from 1933 and a 2p dating back to the 80s. Now it’s time to focus your attention on a £1 coin which you could own without realising.

Over on TikTok, user @coincollectingwizard delved deep into the design which features an engraving error on the reverse. But it’s so small, that you might not even spot it yourself.

In a recent video to their 128,500 followers, the uploader said: “I bet you’ve never seen this coin before that’s worth £500 big ones.” Talking about the £1 coin from 2016, it boasts a rare dual dated error.

The person then explained how to search for the coin yourself. They said: “You’re looking for a 2016 obverse dated coin with 2017 micro engraving on the reverse. The micro engraving is so small you might need a microscope.

“We understand that at least one example has been sold for £2,500 to a buyer in Spain in 2017. The error is particularly difficult to spot due to the size of the micro engraving.”

According to the TikTok page, you must keep your eye on that coin and it’s worth checking any pieces from 2016 in case it’s lying in your collection.

“Remember you are looking for 2016 obverse dated coin with 2017 micro engraving on the reverse. So make sure to check all your coins,” the TikTok user continued. “It’s an easy error to miss because it’s so small, but take your time looking at your coins.”
