Checked your rare coin collection recently? It turns out you could be sitting on an absolute fortune, especially if you have this one 50p piece lurking in your possession

Coins can be worth an absolute fortune if you decide to sell.

With the Royal Mint being responsible for the majority of coinage in the UK, certain pieces can be worth more than others. They say it’s always crucial checking your coin collection as you could be sitting on a fortune without realising.

Now thanks to one TikTok user, there’s a specific 50p coin you must look out for. User @CoinCollectingWizard is known for sharing rare coins and boasts 136,800 followers on the platform.

In a recent video on their page, the user spoke about the Aquatics coin from 2011 which is part of the London 2012 Olympics collection released ahead of the games. While there’s millions of these coins in circulation, what you need to look for is an edition with lines over the swimmer’s face.

If you manage to locate the unique design, it could set you back a whopping £2,000 if you decide to sell. The TikTok user said: “There were many of the pieces released in 2011, but this edition with the lines make it’s a rare coin to find. Not many have been found.”

Since it was posted earlier this week, the video racked up dozens of likes and comments. One said: “I have exactly like this one but in Kenya.” While another added: “Got one.” And a third admitted: “I’ve got one but not the rare one like the hen’s teeth, not many around.”

Looking for more rare coins? Recently, we revealed six pieces which could make you rich, including a “holy grail” design worth £250.

And another occasion, a rare £1 coin with an ‘error’ worth £2,500 went viral online. The same TikTok account said in another video: “I bet you’ve never seen this coin before that’s worth £500 big ones.” Talking about the £1 coin from 2016, it boasts a rare dual dated error.
