The Prince and Princess of Wales currently live in Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor Estate and by royal standards the four-bedroom home is pretty understated. This isn’t Kate and William’s only property – they also retain a residence in Kensington Palace, London, and have Anmer Hall in Norfolk as their country home.

When the couple first moved to their new Windsor home, many reports noted that the couple would have no space for a live-in nanny, as they downsized to the Grade II listed property to provide more privacy and normality for their three children – George, Charlotte, and Louis – away from the many eyes upon them in London.

In an episode of Vanity Fair’s Dynasty podcast, which examined the new role Prince William has begun to occupy in the Royal Family in the last year, royal expert – author Katie Nicholl – joined journalists Erin Vanderhoof and Claire Howarth for a wide-ranging discussion on how the future King has managed the recent challenges of his father and wife’s health issues.

“The truth is he’s got a lot of worries,” Katie Nicholl explained, “but knowing what I know about his personality, he’s practical, he’s pragmatic, he’s optimistic, just like his father. He is a real optimist in life and he also has his grandmother’s [the late Queen Elizabeth] ability to compartmentalise and that’s how he copes with life.”

Vanderhoof replied: “This whole year I’ve been kind of reminded by the story of when they first moved to Adelaide Cottage […] it’s a four-bedroom house in Windsor inside the home park within in the security ring and it doesn’t have space for a nanny. I remember that there was some kind of internet comment like ‘Oh, however, will they live without their nanny!’

“But I think what’s very important for me about that detail is just remembering, you know I think that we have this sense of them as having fabulous lifestyles and all the people in the kitchen, and while the huge staff is the case in the castles, for the most part they have lived without a lot of people around them, partially because they do want to protect their privacy.”

The Sun reported back in 2022 that the family would be packing up and moving to Windsor, with a source quoted as saying: “Kate and William were very keen for a modest home to start their new lives in Windsor. “Adelaide Cottage fits the bill because it is a four-bedroom home and they do not need any more as they have no live-in staff.”
