A savvy gardener has shared her ‘five defence’ method for battling hungry slugs while enjoying the great outdoors this summer, and it should only set you back 99p

The warmer spring days are well on their way, and many Brits will be looking forward to spending quality time in the back garden – but they won’t be alone.

As green-fingered sorts know all too well, ravenous slugs will think nothing of having a good nibble on your beautiful plants, having no table manners whatsoever. With this in mind, it’s important to protect your plants from wandering slugs in search of an alfresco feast, ensuring they stay in tip-top condition all summer long.

With this in mind, a savvy gardener has shared her ‘five defence’ method for keeping slugs well away from any tempting leaves and foliage. And they’d likely have to draw up a battle plan to break through…

Taking to TikTok, gardening guru Amy – known to fans as The Lockdown Gardener – shared an instructive vid taking followers through her detailed defence plan, step by step. The caption read as follows: “My five defense system for protecting plants from slugs: put in a pot, raise up on a metal stand, slather Vaseline on the stand and rim on the pot, copper scouring pads around the base of the plant and lastly some garlic spray! Five defenses! I hope there’s none living in the soil already as I will have just trapped them forever.”

In the clip, Amy could be seen planting her Hostas in a pot placed on a metal stand, before applying a generous helping of Vaseline right along the rim and the legs of the stand and positioning copper scouring pads around the base.

She then spritzed the Hostas with some garlic spray, explaining: “I personally don’t think it works on its own, there’s too much rain where I live. But, together with the other defences, it seems to work quite well.”

You can pick up a tub of Vaseline from Weldricks Pharmacy for 99p, or for £1 at Poundland, making this a very thrifty hack indeed for those gardening on a budget. A number of Amy’s followers vowed to give the hack a try for themselves, having become sick to the back teeth of pesky slugs helping themselves.

Offering another piece of wisdom, one person commented: “An inch of crushed eggshells keeps them away…. I collect throughout the year Bake in oven and crush.” Struck by an amusing image, another wrote: “Me smiling at the mental image of Vaseline-coated slugs sliding around your garden uncontrollably.”
