Operating across the globe, the Royal Navy has over 30,000 active personnel working to support the free flow of trade, build relationships with allies and keep tabs on any threats to the UK’s security.
Some of their most senior roles, Captain and Commissioned Officer, have salaries of over £110,00. But for those just starting out in their career, the Royal Naval apprenticeships can be a great option to finding their sea legs and join the force.
There are two main apprenticeship streams to choose from; a rating role (intermediate) or an accelerated apprenticeship.

Ratings, paid £18,500, join as part of the Royal Navy’s main workforce, doing work which is the foundation of its operations. Ratings progress through the ranks on merit and have the chance to be selected for officer training at any point. After six months this salary increases to £23,496.
Accelerated apprenticeships are for people who have an A-level in Maths or a STEM subject (equivalent to Level 3 diploma). These roles start as a leading hand, two ranks higher than most Engineering Technicians. This role earns over £37,000 from day one and there is a choice between air, submarine, weapon or marine engineering.
For apprenticeships, there is a 10-week stint of training at HMS Raleigh in Cornwall where basically military skills are taught. Apprenticeships then take around 12-18 months to complete and after about two years its expected apprentices will reach the rank of Leading Hand.
