Ryanair has strict hand luggage and check-in bag rules but passengers are being warned that if they fall foul of restrictions they could end up turned away at the gate

Ryanair passengers are being warned not to fall foul of the airline’s luggage rules – or they could risk being turned away at the gate.

Popular airlines such as Ryanair, TUI, Jet2, easyJet and British Airways all have different hand luggage rules which can make it tricky to navigate when you’re packing your bags.

Anyone who books a flight with Ryanair is automatically entitled to a small personal bag free of charge, but it must fit under the seat in front of you and measure no bigger than 40 x 20 x 25cm – for example, this £11.99 holdall from Amazon.

If you want a second bag, you’ll need to pay extra. The easiest option is to upgrade to Priority and 2 Cabin Bags; you get to board the plane first and take both your small personal bag (40x20x25cm) and a 10kg wheelie bag (55x40x20cm) on board, such as the Prestwick Cabin Bag from luxury suitcase brand Antler, which is currently £85. You could also opt for these Ryanair-approved bags from £12.99.

If Priority is sold out, you can buy their 10kg Check-in Bag. However, it’s not just hand luggage rules that travellers need to be aware of.

It’s worth noting that if you pay for checked luggage, these also have restrictions that apply; and getting them wrong could mean you’re denied boarding altogether. Checked-in bags on Ryanair flights can weigh no more than 10kg or 20kg, depending on the baggage you’ve booked, and must be dropped off at the airport check-in desks before security. The 20kg bag should be no larger than 80 x 120 x 120 cm.

If you turn up with a larger bag, you’ll be charged extra – and that can be up to £11 per extra kilo. Rule-breakers who refuse to pay the fee will be refused entry onto the flight.

Ryanair explains on its website: “If you have purchased a check-in bag, you must check this in at the bag drop desk at the airport. If you bring your check-in bags to the boarding gate, you will have to pay a fee per bag, to place them in the aircraft hold. If you do not pay the gate bag fee you will not be able to board your flight.”

If you’re after some new bags and suitcases for your next holiday, then you may want to check out Antler’s latest sale, as the brand is offering deals with up to nearly half price off a whole range of luggage. Meanwhile Aerolite has collections of Ryanair-approved hand luggage bags, as well as Ryanair-approved cabin bags and currently has a sale with some luggage available from £22.99.

Meanwhile if you’re not sure whether a bag will fit, you can check the specifications on the Ryanair website – make sure you give yourself plenty of time before travelling to the airport in case you need to get a new bag ahead of time!
