Sainsbury’s said the changes are designed to “maintain the security” of customers’ Nectar points
Sainsbury’s has announced major changes for Nectar card users that come into effect from today (Monday, 27 October) as part of “efforts to boost security”.
From today, shoppers will need to use the QR code in the Nectar app to collect and spend points at Sainsbury’s stores. The supermarket is urging customers to update their app to the latest version to access the new QR code, which can be found on the home screen.
Customers who use their phone’s digital wallet will also add the QR code to their wallet directly from the app. However, Sainsbury’s confirmed that shoppers will no longer be able to spend points using the old barcode in the app. You must use the new QR code in the Nectar app to spend points.
Those using a plastic Nectar card will still be able to collect points as usual by scanning the barcode, but to spend points they’ll now need to swipe the black magnetic strip down the side of the chip and PIN machine.
There are a few exceptions at petrol stations. Shoppers will still need to use the barcode in the Nectar app when:
- Collecting points at Pay at Pump at Sainsbury’s petrol stations.
- Collecting and spending points at Esso petrol stations.
To find the barcode in the app, users should tap on their card on the home screen and then swipe left. For Android users, Sainsbury’s says the Nectar app will not automatically update the card in Google Wallet. A notification from Google will prompt users to update it, but those who miss it can manually add the new card by selecting ‘add to wallet’ in the Nectar app.
Sainsbury’s said the changes are designed to “maintain the security” of customers’ Nectar points.
A Nectar card is a loyalty card in the UK that allows customers to earn and spend points with partner companies like Sainsbury’s, Argos, and eBay. Members get exclusive discounts and can redeem points for money off purchases, with one point currently worth half a penny (0.5%). You can get a Nectar card for free by joining online, in-store, or through the app, and it’s a way to get a return on your everyday spending.
