Bear breaks into Monrovia home and leaves with Oreos

One thieving bear has caused chaos in Los Angeles, raiding homes by pushing down windows and screens to steal his favourite snack.

The Californian bear has aptly been named “Oreo”, after it was caught red-pawed, sauntering out of a Canyon Crest Drive house with a pack of the biscuits between its jaws. This particular incident occurred on May 24, but just a few days prior, the bear was involved in a separate heist.

Captured on video by ABC 7, Oreo exits the home through a side window, holding a pack of the snacks without a care in the world as it plods off. As it leaves, it stops for a moment to try one of the biscuits, whilst pawing the rest of the package, checking its booty.

This was not the bear’s first or last snack run, as just a few days before it broke into a man’s car for a different package of Oreos. According to reports from KTLA5, the very next day witnesses saw the bear perform exactly the same trip, to exactly the same results.

Residents of Canyon Crest Drive saw Oreo leave with another pack of its favourite snack between its jaws. Before the house break-ins, the bear had boldly entered a homeowner’s car to grab its favourite snacks.

Vina Khoury, a nearby resident, told KTLA5 why the bear had been given it’s name. Vina revealed the rationale behind Oreo’s name, saying, “That’s why we named him Oreo… He’s not just roaming around. He’s actually going into the houses. So now, it’s a very scary thing to leave a window open or your backyard door open or anything.”

“I don’t want them to hurt or kill the bear,” Vina added. “I would hate that, but at the same time, maybe relocate him.”

The bear hasn’t caused residents any injuries but locals are becoming increasingly scared. In an interview with KNBC, another resident expressed concern over Oreo’s inflated confidence since its thieving began, noting that the bear has become “too comfortable opening screens, getting inside the house, and pushing windows.”

In the Monrovia neighbourhood of Los Angeles County, the bear has caused a considerable stir among residents who are at a loss with how to control their furry friend’s appetite. The bear has pushed down windows, broken into cars, and raided homes, and shows no signs of stopping.

According to Monrovia’s website, the area is used to visitors from wild animals. Sitting close the the San Gabriel Mountains, coyotes, mountain lions, deer, bobcats and bears have been known to frequent the area.

When police respond to calls about the wild animals they usually “allow the animal to leave the area and return back to the foothills”. The city website explains: “In most incidents, the officer’s presence, use of vehicles, horns, beanbag rounds, is sufficient to encourage the animal to leave the area.”
