The Fix Radio’s Cafe of the Year competition has been launched after research revealed 73% of adults believe their local cafe is the lifeblood of their local community

Across the UK, diners are nominating their favourite local spots to find the best place for a classic fry up. This competition was sparked after research revealed a whopping 73% of adults believe their local cafe is the heart of their community and that more should be done to celebrate these Great British institutions.

Fix Radio, a builder’s radio station, will crown the winner based on public votes and their own taste tests of the breakfast dishes. The champion will be announced later this year, with celebratory stickers placed in the windows of the winning establishments.

A spokesperson for Fix Radio declared: “We’ll be leaving no stone unturned when it comes to finding the best builder’s cafe. As our research shows, these institutions are highly valued by local people and provide such an important service. It’s only right we celebrate them and give back, as they have supported local communities across the country for decades.”

A significant 75% said they wish they could visit their greasy spoon more often to enjoy a fry-up. On average, people are willing to travel up to four miles to eat at their favourite cafe, according to the survey of 2,000 adults.

Nearly half (44%) said a Great British atmosphere was a crucial factor in choosing a cafe. Three-quarters of customers have stated that price is a significant factor when selecting a cafe, and they’d be prepared to shell out £9.15 for a full English breakfast at their preferred spot.

Eggs (84%), sausages (82%) and bacon (80%) are the must-have items in a traditional fry-up. Other popular items include baked beans (67%), hash browns (50%) and grilled tomatoes (52%). However, black pudding (29%), chips (8%) and white pudding (6%) were less favoured options.

Almost half (49%) of adults completely rejected the idea of a vegetarian or vegan version of the full English, according to research by OnePoll.

The classic British cuppa came out on top (55%), beating coffee (43%), orange juice (39%) and water (14%) as the drink of choice.

A spokesperson for Fix said: “Builders and a fry up at their favourite cafe go hand-in-hand. Getting it spot-on is the best way of putting a greasy spoon’s mettle to the test! “.

“If you want to find out how good a cafe is for the building trade, then you’ve got to try its fry up. Our favourite bit of a fry up? It has to be the bacon – done to perfection and powering the trade through a hard day on site.”
