A man was put in a headlock and strangled during a fight on the London Underground, causing him to pass out. The victim, in his 50s, was walking towards the escalators at Bank station when a suspect began swearing at him.
British Transport Police (BTP) say a “verbal disagreement” broke out and escalated into an altercation at around 3.10pm on June 30. The attacker choked the man before fleeing on a Central line train.
Officers investigating the vicious assault have released two CCTV images in connection. They show a bearded Black man entering the busy station in a yellow T-shirt and shorts.
He is also wearing black trainers and a bracelet on his right arm. A force spokesman said: “Officers believe the man in the image may have information that could help their enquiries.”
The Central line is the most crime-ridden Tube line on the Transport for London network, according to data provided by the authority. Between January 1 and August 30 2024, 1,419 incidents were reported, making up around 17 per cent of all offending.
Overall, passengers encountered more than 16,000 crimes in the half-year. Earlier this month, a man was attacked at the ticket line of Mile End station, leaving him with a serious head injury.
Witnesses, or anyone who recognises the suspect, are urged to text BTP on 61016, quoting 391 of June 30. Anonymous reports can also be made to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
