The payments are made when the temperature hits zero for seven days

With winter upon us and the Met Office predicting freezing temperatures as low as -7C across the UK, you could be eligible for a £25 cash boost from the government.

The Cold Weather Payment scheme offers financial assistance to households when the temperature plummets to zero degrees or below for seven consecutive days. The scheme operates annually from 1 November to 31 March, with those on certain means-tested benefits qualifying for the funds.

Each seven-day period of freezing temperatures is worth £25, and payments are made automatically. To verify your eligibility for this payment, you can use the Government’s postcode registration tool. This will inform you whether households in your area will receive the payment.

You can use the government’s cold weather payment postcode checker here.

Ensure you select the appropriate country, as the calculators differ between regions. Residents of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland must choose the correct one, reports the Express.

Funds will be deposited into your account within 14 days following the seven-day period of sub-zero temperatures, so keep an eye out if you qualify. You’ll be able to identify the payment on your bank statement as the reference will begin with your National Insurance number followed by ‘ DWP CWP’ for those residing in England and Wales.

Scottish residents can’t claim Cold Weather Payments, but they do have access to the Winter Heating Payment – Scotland’s equivalent of the Winter Fuel Allowance, which could be worth up to £305.

As previously stated, to qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment, you must be receiving certain means-tested benefits. Each benefit comes with its own specific eligibility criteria that could entitle an individual to payment, such as having a disability or a pensioner premium, or living with a child under five.
