Seven charged after protesters clash with police during Palestine Action rally at Trafalgar Square

A total of seven people have now been charged following a London protest in support of Palestine Action yesterday (June 23). Alleged clashes between police and those gathered in Trafalgar Square led to 13 people being taken into custody.

A number of those arrested will now appear in court as the CPS has granted charges including assault and public order offences. These include people from Hackney and Tower Hamlets, as well as residents of Luton and Hove.

“While the protest initially began in a peaceful manner, officers faced violence when they went into the crowd to speak to three individuals whose behaviour was arousing suspicion,” a Met Police spokesperson said, “This sequence of events repeated itself on multiple occasions, with officers being surrounded on each occasion they tried to deal with an incident.”

After the protest, Liam Mizrahi, of no fixed abode, was charged with a racially aggravated public order offence under Section 4a Public Order Act. The 25-year-old was remanded and was due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today (Monday, June 24).

Eleanor Simmonds, also of no fixed address, faces a charge of assaulting an emergency worker. The 31-year-old was bailed and will appear at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Friday, July 25. ·

Bipasha Tahsin, a 21-year-old living in Pinchin Street, Whitechapel faces a single count of the same charge. She was also bailed and will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, July 8.

A 37-year-old woman living in London Fields’ Elsdale Street was charged with two counts of assaulting an emergency worker. Lavina Richards has been remanded to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, June 25.

Also of Hackney, Chippendale Street resident Tom Jubert, 40, was told to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday, July 21. He faces a charge of breaching conditions imposed under Section 14 of the Public Order Act.

Two men, residing in Somerhill Road, Hove and Berkeley Path, Luton, respectively were also charged with breaching conditions imposed under Section 14 of the Public Order Act The pair, aged 59 and 28, were both bailed and will attend Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday, July 21.

Additionally, a 31-year-old woman received a caution for assaulting an emergency worker.

The protest was initially planned to take place outside the Houses of Parliament, but the location was changed early on Monday morning when Scotland Yard imposed an exclusion zone.

Palestine Action has staged a series of demonstrations in recent months, including spraying the London offices of Allianz Insurance with red paint over its alleged links to Israeli defence company Elbit, and vandalising US president Donald Trump’s Turnberry golf course in South Ayrshire.
