A serial shoplifter has been jailed for stealing approximately £6500 worth of alcohol, meat, and other goods from a local petrol station.

John Harris Bolton, 38, stole from a BP garage in Greenwich over half a year and was arrested on February 4 after the Met and South London businesses worked together to identify him.

Police gathered evidence from the businesses’ systems and CCTV to prosecute Bolton. After Bolton was charged he continued to offend whilst on bail and was arrested again on March 13.

Bolton was brought before the courts, where overwhelming evidence was presented to the Magistrates. He pleaded guilty to 31 offences of theft and was handed a 35-week custodial sentence at Bexleyheath Magistrates’ Court on March 13.

Bolton has also been banned from entering any BP store in South East London for five years. Superintendent Rav Pathania, leading local policing in Greenwich, said: “Bolton stole a huge amount of goods, and I’m pleased he’s paid the price for his crimes.

“We know the damaging effect shoplifting has on businesses, especially the awful impact on workers who feel threatened by those who target their workplace. This was a massive effort which I hope demonstrates how we will drive down crime, listen to community concerns, and tackle criminals who target shops and businesses.”
