A can of Tesco’s Lentil and Vegetable Bolognese had a ‘meat warning’ sticker placed on the front – prompting worries of a possible recall from a shopper in a ‘local community shop’
A shopper was left shocked after they spotted a “meat warning” on what should be a tin of Tesco brand vegan soup.
A browse of the aisles in a “local community shop” led to the discovery of a can of Lentil and Vegetable Bolognese – usually plant-based product – that was labelled as not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. The baffled shopper took to Reddit with their find – asking if it was a “common recall”.
Their tinned goods had a sticker on the front clearly outlining that the typically vegan-friendly food might have had meat in it. Forum users on the r/Tesco subreddit then speculated over what the problem with the can was.
The original poster wrote: “Is this a common recall? I am not vegetarian or vegan but found this in my local community shop. How many ‘vegan’ products get pulled from shelves for containing meat? I assume it was a contaminated machine during the production or canning process but it got me thinking about how many slip through the net.”
Some commenters suggested reporting the product to the Food Standards Agency, who should list reasons for a product recall. No information is available on the FSA website at this time regarding the lentil and vegetable Bolognese cans.
The “rich & flavourful” meal was seen on a shelf in a local shop and not a Tesco, although the can is Tesco branded. A sticker on the front of the tin warned: “May contain meat. Not suitable for Vegetarians & Vegans.”
Another user commented: “If you’re concerned about vegan food being contaminated with meat don’t buy canned. Buy produce and make it yourself. The canned stuff probably comes from the same factory so you’re reliant on people actually doing their jobs correctly, which they often don’t.”
A third added: “If they really want to be 100% safe, they should fund their own farms and food processing sites, raise all the animals and get all the produce and make it themselves.”
Tesco has been contacted for comment.
