Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has come under fire from eagle-eyed shoppers after making a major change to its beloved meal deal – with one unhappy customer branding the ordeal an ‘abomination’
Brits aren’t happy after spotting a crafty change to their beloved meal deal.
Whether you’re a plain ham and cheese kind of persn, or like to get adventurous with a tuna crunch, the meal deal has become as quintessentially British as a cup of tea. They’re ideal for commuters, or those busying around doing errands for the day – and have always been a pretty good steal if you selected your drink, sandwich, and snack wisely (£3 Naked smoothies, we’re looking at you).
However, eagle-eyed shoppers recently realised there had been a change to the bargain lunch offerings – and they’re not impressed… A few years ago and you’d never part with more than £3 for a meal deal, unless you were upgrading to a posh M&S sarnie. However, with inflation taking its toll on food prices, all of that has changed. Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s is the latest retailer to mark-up its meal deals, raising its prices for the first time in three years from £3.50 to £3.75. Amidst the cost-of-living crisis, every penny counts, so a 25p spike is bound to get noticed.
In fact, shoppers were so upset by the price spike that one person nearly ‘cried’ over the ordeal. “The country is past the point of any repair. The Sainsbury’s meal deal has gone up to £3.75,” complained another X (formerly Twitter) user. A third raged on: “Just when I thought Monday’s couldn’t get any worse, I’ve just realised Sainsbury’s meal deals are now £3.75.” While a fourth urged new Prime Minister Keir Starmer to ‘sort it out’. Others branded the up-charge a ‘complete abomination’.
A spokesperson for the supermarket said: “We want to make good food affordable and accessible to everyone and so we have kept the price of our meal deal the same for over three years. We continue to offer one of the best value meal deals around, with millions of delicious possible combinations which could mean customers save more than half off the usual price, whether they’re grabbing a hot bacon roll, a fruit pot and a coffee for breakfast, or a lunchtime sarnie with crisps and a smoothie.”
The Mirror has contacted Sainsbury’s for comment.
