The first day of December will see a downpour in London

Londoners are bracing themselves for a downpour on the first day of December, while other parts of the country are receiving yellow weather warnings from the Met Office. The forecaster is predicting a washout in the capital throughout this morning (Monday, December 1) and for much of the afternoon, with precipitation as high as 95 per cent in London.

The heavy rainfall will reduce in its intensity in the mid-afternoon before starting up again this evening. The wet weather will finally ease off in the early hours of tomorrow (Tuesday) and will stay dry until noon, before lighter rains emerge once again in the afternoon.

It’s not all bad though, as the precipitation keeps temperatures mild – with peaks in the double digits at 12C today (Monday), 11C on Tuesday and hovering between 9C and 10C for the rest of the week. Wednesday promises to be a mild and largely dry day, with some mild rain late in the evening.

Thursday and Friday will see intermittent rain with occasional patches of sunshine, while the weekend is also tipped to be mild and largely dry, with temperatures remaining stable at around 10C in the afternoon.

London is not faring too badly compared to other parts of the country, with an amber weather warning in South Wales on Monday and predictions of potential flooding. The Met Office describe Monday as a day of “disruptive weather for many” while a “changeable week of weather” is on the cards for much of the country, with low pressure continuing to influence the forecast through much of the period and a mixture of rain, showers and some sunny spells.

Met Office Chief Forecaster Rebekah Hicks said: “The transition back to wet weather will start overnight Sunday and into Monday, with rain the most significant hazard in the weather forecast.

“Heavy rain will move over south Wales from late Sunday and through Monday. Whilst rainfall amounts will vary, the largest accumulations are expected over the highest ground in south Wales and could reach 100-120mm through the day. 60-80mm is most likely for many hills within the Amber warning area, while those to lower levels should see around 20-40mm through the day.

“Wider yellow warnings for rain have also been issued for the southwest and northwest of England, central and northern parts of Wales, as well as southwest Scotland, with disruption also possible in these areas through the day.”
