It’s time to start getting your garden ready for the spring season, and your garden furniture might need a makeover and a good scrubbing after cultivating stains from winter
Spring is finally here which means sunny days are on the horizon and the fantasy of enjoying your morning coffee in your garden or inviting people round for a BBQ could soon be reality.
As flowers start to bloom and temperatures rise, you might be starting to think about giving your garden a spring makeover. It’s hard to avoid dirt building up on garden furniture in winter when heavy rain pours – your favourite patio sets are bound to get the odd stain here and there. So, now might be a good time for a deep clean.
Often the best way to clean your outdoor furniture is determined by what material it is made from – most being plastic, metal, or wood. An expert says a £1 product could bring your outdoor furniture back to life.
According to the garden furniture experts at Furniture Maxi, the last thing you want to use for cleaning wooden garden furniture is bleach. Bleach can damage wood and other natural materials – but can be used on resin or plastic-based furniture.
Instead, for wooden furniture using a simple sugar scrub works like magic. The product can be purchased from Wilko for £1. The product is listed to remove dirt, grease, and nicotine. According to Wilko’s website, the product has been high in demand recently.
Furniture Maxi recommends that you start by cleaning your garden furniture with a cloth to remove any dust or dirt on the surface. Next, it is recommended to mix two litres of warm water as well as 1/8 cup of washing-up liquid. You can easily pick up a bottle of washing-up liquid for 69p at Tesco. Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s is selling a 450ml bottle of washing-up liquid for 62p.
Use a cloth or sponge to apply the solution to the furniture and wipe down the timber – ensuring not to use too much water on it. Once cleaned, rinse off the furniture with another cloth and let it dry naturally.
For those who don’t have wooden furniture, Furniture Maxi advises that for metal furniture you can use a mixture of water and white vinegar, or a polishing spray for the best results. If you notice any scratches on the metal, use a soft cloth as well as light sandpaper to make them disappear.
Plastic furniture can be cleaned with bleach while rattan furniture is easy to clean – needing a simple mix of washing up liquid and water and a wipe down.
