Six rare 50p coins could make you rich – including ‘holy grail’ piece worth £250

Collecting coins can be fun and exciting, but it’s even more thrilling when one of the designs in your pocket is worth a fortune. So have you checked your wallets recently?

When was the last time you checked your coin collection?

Certain designs can be worth a fortune if you ever decide to sell. Whether it’s the Kew Gardens 50p or a commemorative piece, it’s good to know what its real value is. Although the Royal Mint is responsible for most coins in the UK, sometimes it’s designs from a few years ago worth owning.

Previously, we revealed other rare coins could make you a millionaire, including a 1p from 1933 and a 2p dating back to the 80s. And another occasion, a rare £1 coin with an ‘error’ worth £2,500 went viral online. Now it’s best to check your coin collection again.

Over on TikTok, user @coincollectingwizard, who boasts 133,000 followers for sharing rare coin content, revealed which 50p pieces can bag you loads. In the video, they started with: “Rare 50p coins in your change.”

The user then listed six coins to keep an eye on. In the clip, the uploader continued: “First the 2017 Royal Shield 50p, this has a mintage of 1.8million, and an uncirculated condition is worth £7, while a circulated is £1.

“Next is the Jemima Puddleduck 50p from 2016, this has a mintage of 2.1million. An uncirculated version can be worth £15, while a circulated is £8.

“For my favourite design, it’s the Issac Newton 50p, it’s £8 in uncirculated and £3 in circulated. Now for the holy grail, the Kew Gardens 50p, this has a mintage of only 210,000. A new condition is around £250, and circulated is £145.”

The user ended the post by discussing the Flopsy Bunny 50p coin which is worth £7 in uncirculated condition, then £5 in circulated. Meanwhile Mrs Tittlemouse’s 50p coin also got a shout out. The design has a mintage of 1.7million which makes it worth £5 for uncirculated, then £3 for circulated.

Since the clip was shared, it racked up hundreds of likes and comments. One said: “Got all of them!” Another added: “Brilliant video,” as a third chimed in: “I have them all numerous times.”
