One December night in 1965 would change the future of the small town US town of Kecksburg, Pennsylvania forever as residents reported seeing something very odd falling from the sky

Ever since a December night in 1965 Kecksburg, Pennsylvania, US has been known for one thing.

On December 9, 1965 a huge ‘fireball’ was spotted across seven states in the US and Canada as it shot across the night skies, and made it’s way to Kecksburg after crashing in some woods.

Shortly after residents quickly became aware of the news and were adamant that it was an in fact a UFO that had made its way to their town.

And before long it was even jokingly referred to as the ‘space acorn’ by residents, due to it’s unusual shape.

Seemingly putting an end to speculation, the US government were hasty in updating those concerned that it was actually a meteor that had crashed to Earth.

But that hasn’t stopped local residents playfully celebrating the famous sighting all those years ago, with an annual three day festival to mark the occasion hosted by the Kecksburg Volunteer Fire Department.

One local who was in attendance this year took to Reddit to share their experience, writing: “This is really awesome, I enjoyed it greatly! It was almost like a flea market with the vendors selling alien/UFO themed stuff! I got a great poster of the Kecksburg Acorn shaped UFO at it’s crash site- 10/10; truly awesome! Wished I could have been there for the other two days!”

The case of the Kecksburg ‘UFO’ was popularised in 1990 when it was at the center of the ‘Mysteries Unsolved’ TV show where a number of residents were questioned about the incident. The show even made a replica of the ‘space acorn’ that was later donated to the town.

Kecksburg isn’t alone in it’s suspected UFO sighting, with those living throughout the state of Pennsylvania also spotting mysterious objects over the years.

There have been more than 5,000 sightings reportedly sent to the National UFO Reporting Center since 1947.
