A foodie used up her leftovers at the end of the week, when she needed to do a food shop, to create a delicious meal – saving plenty of money on new ingredients in the process

It’s all too easy to succumb to the allure of a takeaway at the end of a long week, especially when your fridge and freezer are looking rather bare.

But one woman has shown how you can whip up a tasty meal with whatever odds and ends you have left – even if it’s not a dish you’ve cooked before.

Sarah Baus took to TikTok to share her culinary creativity, admitting she was due for a “grocery shopping trip” – but she decided to challenge herself to create a scrumptious dish with what she had on hand.

She had some chicken breast available and “an idea” for it. She also had heavy cream and broccoli in her kitchen, and mentioned that she often prepares a spinach and chicken dish with broccoli, so she decided to draw inspiration from that.

Sarah emphasised that she always strives to make something out of her leftover food as she hates wasting anything. She also had some banza pasta, which is made from chickpeas, so she felt her ingredients weren’t a “bad line-up”.

Sarah proceeded to cut the chicken breast in half, pound it with a rolling pin, and then slice it into strips. She said she was going to “roughly reference” the recipe she frequently makes, starting by frying the chicken.

She also “discovered half an onion in the fridge”, which she thought would be “good for the sauce”. She had some “leftover chicken broth” which she added to the onions, followed by heavy cream, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes. She thickened the sauce with cornstarch.

The video concluded with Sarah serving the chicken over the pasta, declaring it was “stunning” upon tasting the final product.

“My great-grandmother had the ability to make a like five-course meal when you looked at the pantry and it was literally dust,” she revealed, aspiring to be “as good as her” at making do with what she has in.

Sarah received heaps of praise for creating “something out of nothing”, but many noted they never have that many leftovers. One quipped: “Girl I have chicken and half a ziplock bag of leftover mashed potatoes.” Another pleaded: “I got eggs and frozen lemonade, help me lord.”
