The chase started in Clapham and ended in Brixton with a street closed for much of the evening
A man has been arrested after a South London police chase which went on for more than a mile. It happened when officers were alerted to reports of an armed robbery at a shop on Clapham High Street, Clapham, at about 5pm yesterday (Monday, November 24).
It led to a 1.4 mile chase through South London which ended on Bellefields Road, in Brixton, at 5.11pm after the suspect driver smashed into a police car. The man in his 40s was arrested.
Nearby a separate police car – heading to offer support – crashed into a car driven by a member of the public on Brixton Road at the junction of Ingleton Street. Brixton Road was closed on Monday evening as a result.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “On Monday, November 24, at 5pm police were in pursuit of a vehicle, following reports of an armed robbery of a shop on Clapham High Street. There were no reported injuries in relation to this incident.
“The pursuit of the suspect’s vehicle ended on Bellefields Road, Brixton, at 5.11pm when the driver made off from the vehicle following contact with the police vehicle. The driver, a man in his 40s, has been detained by police and [was] assessed by the London Ambulance Service [LAS].
“Bellefields Road [was] closed while an investigation commences. Another police unit, travelling to support the incident, was in collision with a vehicle belonging to a member of the public on Brixton Road at the junction of Ingleton Street.
“The LAS attended this scene to asses injuries to both members of the public and police officers. Brixton Road is currently closed to support an investigation to the collision.”
