Southwark murder probe launched as man dies days after high street attack

The Metropolitan Police has launched a murder probe as a 43-year-old died four days after being attacked in Southwark. Police were called to Borough High Street at 2.55am on Saturday, September 13 to reports of an altercation.

A man, later identified as Michael John Edwards of Nuneaton, was rushed to hospital in a life-threatening condition where he sadly died on Wednesday, September 17. His family are being supported by specialist officers.

Lewis Macleod, of Hadleigh Road in Sunderland was charged on Monday, September 15 for one count of causing grievous bodily harm and one count of actual bodily harm. He appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court and has been remanded into custody.

The Crown Prosecution Service will review the charges following the death of Mr Edwards.

Detective Inspector Andy Griffin, who is leading the investigation, said: “My team are working at pace to establish the full circumstances that led to Michael’s tragic death.

“Our thoughts remain with his family and friends at this very difficult time. They continue to be supported by specialist officers.”
