There’s nothing worse than a dull and dirty rug, but Stacey Solomon has shared a nifty trick that gives a new lease of life to your dreary furniture – and it only costs 15p
Stacey Solomon has revealed a simple trick for rejuvenating dull and dirty household rugs in the latest episode of Sort Your Life Out on BBC One.
The TV icon and her cleaning crew headed to the Lincolnshire town of Horncastle to support one family declutter their home and transform their space in just seven days. This week, Stacey offered a helping hand to single mum Rachel, who had lost control of her home following her divorce six years prior.
Rachel: “We have always had a lot of things, but the state of the clutter has definitely got worse since my ex-husband Darren left. I feel guilty that the house has gotten into such a state, it’s very overwhelming and hard to deal with.
“We have reached a crisis point where not doing anything about the clutter is just not an option anymore.” The school finance officer is mum to Madeline and Amelia, who are both involved in competitive dance.
Amelia said: “I think the main reason the house is cluttered is just because we don’t have time, every day of the week we have dance classes. I like my house because it is my home, but it’s getting harder and harder to enjoy being here with all the stuff.”
As the trusty team helped the family decide which personal items to keep or discard, cleaning expert Iwan Carrington tackled the lifeless living room rug using a handful of household items. Taking the mat outside, Iwan explained that his handy trick simply requires warm water, a saucepan lid, a teatowel, and a laundry detergent capsule.
He then placed the laundry capsule in warm water, before soaking the tea towel in the foamy mixture. Next, Iwan wrapped the tea towel around the saucepan lid to create a “cleaning pad”. Holding the lid’s handle, he scraped over the rug to remove any dirt and dust.
“You’ll see this is lifting the pile, but it’s also dragging away any surface fluff or hairs,” he continued. He then lifted up the tea towel to highlight the dirt that had been collected, adding: “Ohh look at that.”
Shoppers can bag laundry detergent from Lidl for £2.99 for 20 pieces, working out at just 15p per capsule. Earlier in the episode, Iwan worked his magic on the windows to give them a streak-free shine.
He said: “We’ve got quite a thick layer of dust on the window. So, I’m just using some warm soapy water, just with a little bit of washing up liquid in it.” After wiping over the windows, he used a squeegee to remove any excess liquid.
Iwan then shared an old-school trick, which involves spraying the windows with a white vinegar and water combination, before using scrunched-up newspaper to buff them up.
