There’s nothing more infuriating than your favourite pair of jeans fading in the wash and having to throw them out.

Jeans are a staple in many people’s wardrobes, but they can easily fade over time from washing, especially black jeans. However, fans of cleaning guru Mrs Hinch have shared their top tips to stop them fading in the wash.

The hack will cost just 40p and it’s most likely a kitchen staple you already have in your cupboards, so you can be sure your favourite pair of black jeans keep their colour no matter how many times you throw them in the wash.

The trick came after a woman asked on the popular Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips how to stop black jeans from fading – and many people advised to use white vinegar.

She asked: “Best way to wash black jeans so they don’t fade?” And fellow cleaning enthusiasts came to the comments to share their suggestions, as most were in agreement white vinegar is the secret.

One Facebook user wrote: “So soak in vinegar for a little while before you wash them. It will set the colour dye!” While another echoed: “Inside out, add white vinegar to your wash.” A third chimed: “Vinegar and baking soda works great,” and a fourth said: “White vinegar works best and is also a disinfectant.”

However, Katy Roberts, a washing machine expert at AO said that adding white vinegar to the wash can, it can “weaken the jeans’ fabric”, according to The Express. She explained: “Vinegar is sometimes touted as a natural way to maintain dark denim, but this can weaken the jeans’ fabric and cause it to deteriorate more quickly.

“Instead, try using a detergent specifically formulated for dark colours and washing your jeans inside out. This can help prevent fading keeping your jeans fresher for longer.”

Other suggestions included putting them on a cold wash, adding salt to the wash as well and washing them inside out to stop the fading also.

You can buy white vinegar for as little as 35p from Tesco or if you want the convenience of having it delivered straight to your door, you can buy it on Amazon for £5.99.
