Having a smelly washing machine can be quite a pain to deal with, but the problem could actually be solved without even spending a penny, so have you tried this trick before?
It’s pretty hard to live without a washing machine, given how useful they are on a daily basis. But what many people don’t realise is they have to clean their washing machines from time to time to banish any mould or bad smells lingering in their home.
Now one woman revealed how to eliminate any horrible scents from her appliance without having to spend money or use any elbow grease for that matter. Known as the @theweescottycleaners, who boasts 129,000 followers on TikTok, the expert showed how to squash the problem for anyone “suffering from a smelly washing machine” in a matter of seconds using hot water.
So go boil yourself a kettle and get started!
Writing in the caption, the cleaner said: “We’ve got you sorted, use some boiling water and put it in the drawer to clear that tube in your washing machine and it will deep clean your washing machine.”
In the clip, she continued: “We’ve got a very old machine here and it’s smelly, I’ve tried everything but one of the top tips I can give you is using a boiling water.
“I’ll tell you why, you have a tube that goes through your drawer and down into your drum and it only ever gets cold water. So see if you go in with boiling water, it cleans it and gets rid of that smell.
“Do it a couple of times and it will clear that tube.”
And it really is that simple. Since the hack was shared, the video racked up 1,200 likes and dozens of comments.
How do you clean your washing machine?
1. Clean the drawer:
- Remove the drawer (check your manual on how to do this)
- Soak it in warm, soapy water
- Scrub away any residue with a brush or sponge
- Rinse and dry before reinserting
2. Clean the door seal:
- Wipe the rubber gasket with a cloth soaked in a 1:1 solution of water and vinegar
- Check for trapped debris, hair or mould
- Dry thoroughly
3. Clean the drum:
- Pour 2 cups of white vinegar into the drum
- Sprinkle 1/4 cup of baking soda inside the drum
- Run the hottest and longest wash cycle (without any laundry)
4. Clean the filter
- Make sure you check your appliance’s manual for instructions on safely removing and cleaning the filter
It’s important to give your appliance a thorough clean every so often to avoid any mould build-up and bad smells. It’s also crucial to refer to your washing machine’s manual for instructions first.
