There will be yellow warnings in place across much of the UK

London could be battered by gale force winds this weekend when Storm Amy moves towards southern England. Whilst much of the bad weather surrounds Scotland and Northern Ireland, the capital is not getting off entirely scot-free.

We’ll avoid the worst of the action on Friday evening (October 3), with yellow warnings in place across much of the UK. However, rain will strike our fine in the early hours of Saturday, including heavy droplets from around 6am to 8am.

After then, we’ll enjoy sunny spells throughout the day – but these may be best enjoyed from the comfort of our homes. A strong breeze will set in from 9am, before kicking up a notch just after 2pm.

The Met Office is predicting wind speeds will reach up to 40mph, before dipping back down to 33mph. This is likely to make walking around more difficult, and could toss around around garden furniture and outdoor bins.

Luckily, meteorologists do not believe this will last long, and expect winds to return to a light breeze by 7pm or so. Sunday will then be pleasantly mild with peaks of 17C and sunny intervals.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tom Crabtree said: “Although there is still some uncertainty about the exact track Storm Amy will take, the system will bring gale force winds across northern and western regions, with gusts widely reaching 50 to 60 miles per hour inland in northern Britain, and potentially reaching 70 to 80 miles per hour in places. With even stronger gusts on exposed coasts and hills, mainly in the northwest.

“Heavy rainfall is also expected, in particular over western Scotland, where totals could exceed 30-50 mm in 6-9 hours, increasing the risk of localised flooding. Forecasts and warnings will be updated as the situation becomes more clear, therefore it is important to keep an eye forecast for your area over the coming days.”

Longer-term forecasts suggest a westerly pattern will persist into next week, with further spells of rain and wind – although there is a chance of drier interludes by mid-October.
