Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has responded to heavy backlash after one shopper spotted a sign in-store stating ‘Yoghurts Now Class as a Main’ in the meal deal bundle
Brits love a meal deal, but fierce debate has broken out following a rather controversial sign.
There is no greater feeling of joy than picking up a £3 smoothie, a double-decker sarnie, and a packet of crisps for the grand total of £3.50. It’s an irresistible bargain that makes grabbing lunch on the go easy and satisfying. That is until now…
One supermarket has sparked a flurry of criticism online after a baffled shopper spotted a major change to the meal deal offerings. However, it turns out the decision isn’t exactly new, and has been angering hungry lunchers for some time now.
Journalist Hannah Al-Othman posted a picture at her local Sainsbury’s store depicting a sign in the meal deal aisle that read ‘Yoghurts Now Class as a Main’. “B*****cks do they,” she captioned the post.
At the time of writing, the image has been viewed a whopping 529,000 times and has attracted a slew of comments from disgruntled shoppers. “Sort it out lads, this is outrageous,” fumed one person. Another agreed, commenting: “This can’t be real.” While a third added: “Won’t be going there then…”
Many joked that the store would start selling ‘leaking fridge water’ or ‘condensation from fruit packets’ as a meal deal drink. However, others defended the decision arguing yoghurts are a good source of protein and can help you feel satiated for longer.

This isn’t the first time Sainsbury’s has sparked debate for categorising certain yoghurts as a main in the meal deal. Back in 2022, one shopper took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express her outrage after she thought she was ‘overcharged’ at the counter.
Kerry purchased a can of Monster energy drink, a chicken and bacon sandwich, and a yoghurt – but was charged for three items separately. “I’ve been overcharged at Durham Arnison Centre store as the meal deal offer hasn’t been applied,” she said. “I’m not able to go back to the store. How would I be able to sort this?” Sainsbury’s replied to the complaint stating the meal didn’t discount ‘didn’t apply’ as the yoghurt is ‘considered a main and not a side’.
Similarly, one shopper took to Reddit last year and was left ‘devastated’ after getting to the counter and realising their yoghurt and sandwich were both classed as mains. “Who makes these deals?!” they fumed.
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson told the Mirror: “Our meal deal includes over 500 options – from sarnies and salads to croissants, fruit and yoghurts. Smoothies and hot drinks, including Costa Coffee, are also included, so many of our customers choose Sainsbury’s for their breakfast, as well as lunches on the go. Our larger, topped yoghurts are a popular breakfast main, while our smaller yoghurts are available as a snack.”
