The suspected brothel has been shut down following multiple criminal damage incidents

A property in Grove Way, Dagenham, suspected of being used as a brothel, has been closed following a successful Premises Closure Order obtained by Barking and Dagenham Council.

Barkingside Magistrates Court granted a three-month closure order on Thursday 30 October for the leasehold property, which had a Private Rented Property Licence and was let on a short-term rental agreement. The property had become the focus of repeated criminal damage incidents, causing distress to neighbouring residents.

The first incident occurred on Tuesday 30 September, when black oil was thrown across windows and doors of the property and nearby homes. This was followed by further damage involving red paint splashed across properties and vehicles. A third incident on Saturday 18 October saw more paint thrown and windows of nearby homes smashed.

The Closure Order, supported by the Police, now prohibits the leaseholder, tenant, or any other individual from entering the property until 29 January 2026.

Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, said: This closure sends a clear message that we will not tolerate properties being used for criminal activities. The repeated criminal damage incidents caused significant distress to residents, and we acted swiftly with the Police to put a stop to it.”

He added: “We urge landlords to take their responsibilities seriously and carry out proper checks when letting properties, especially on short-term agreements.”

The council is reminding landlords to remain vigilant when letting properties, particularly on a short-term basis, to ensure they are not being used for illegal activities. Residents who suspect a property is operating as a brothel are encouraged to report their concerns to the Police or the council.
