England will take on Switzerland in Germany for Euro 2024 tomorrow, and it seems our opponents may want to learn more about the British Isles.
All eyes will be on Gareth Southgate’s men as they prepare to take on Switzerland in Euro 2024 on Saturday.
And to help its fans prepare, Swiss media have collated a list of quirky British things that will help fans get to know their team’s opposition a bit better. Among the funny pictures shared by Watson are jibes about British cuisine, the weather, and passive aggressive notes shared on parked cars.
The site writes: “We already knew before Brexit that people in England sometimes operate a little differently to the rest of Europe. But now that Switzerland are facing the team from the big island in the quarter-finals, it has come back to haunt us.”
Among the quirky British moments listed was a mischievous reaction to redundancies at the Thwaites Brewery in Blackburn, Lancashire in 2014. After 60 jobs were cut, the H, I and E of Thwaites blacked out on the brewery sign.
It also mentioned an image taken by photographer Joel Goodman outside Manchester’s Arndale centre on New Year’s Eve in 2015. In the image, a man was pictures sprawled along the floor holding a beer as police dealt with another man nearby.
The site also pokes fun at Britain’s relationship with its police forces. Showing an image of a youngster standing on a police car captioned “Pfff…the authorities. Long live #brexit!” While a video of police officers dancing at London’s Notting Hill Carnival in 2013.
Other topics featured on the whimsical list included the late Queen Elizabeth II’s variety of colourful dresses, captioned “the most beautiful rainbow ever”. And the England crest coins that line up to create on single pattern.
Of course, it wouldn’t be the lead up to the Euro 2024 clash without a jab at the England football team either. One image shows the team’s Three Lions crest on a St George’s flag captioned “invents lots of popular sports. Gets beaten by everyone they teach them to.”
Another shows a bulging full English breakfast with a note saying “We could not fail to talk about the culinary tradition of our rivals.”
English humour is recognised around the world, and is something this weekend’s foes seemingly regard quite highly. Watson highlights Monty Python as something that “not be missed”.
It also shared a note left on a car saying “this vehicle was very clearly parked by a deranged f******. God help us all if he/she is allowed to breed.”
The poster at the time explained the vehicle was parked on a “very narrow street” making it difficult to pass.
Having listed the quirky features of England, Watson concluded: “Our future rivals remain a big mystery.” It finished the piece with “Hopp Suisse” – Go Switzerland.
