Shoppers have been sent into a frenzy after spotting a ‘greasy spoon’ classic has been transformed into a meal deal sandwich at Tesco. However, not everybody seems keen on the new product
A beloved British food has finally been immortalised in the form of a meal deal sarnie.
Brits love nothing more than a meal deal, especially when you watch the total cost of your bill half at the checkout. But, choosing from simple fillings like cheese and tomato or plain old ham can get a little boring.
Luckily, Tesco has spiced things up with their latest release which is inspired by a ‘greasy spoon’ classic. Available for a limited time only, the new sarnie has launched in stores nationwide and is already sparking conversation amongst hungry shoppers – but not everyone is convinced.
The Beechwood Ham, Egg and Chips sandwich is exactly what it says on the packaging: smoked ham, egg mayo, salt and vinegar fries with ketchup all sandwiches between some good old-fashioned white bread. It is priced at £3 or for £3.40 as a meal deal (if you have a Clubcard) which comes with a drink and snack.
The controversial sarnie was posted online, where it received a slew of mix reviews. “It’s the next best thing to being down the caff. It tasted great! Have it with builder’s tea,” one person raved.
Another agreed, commenting: ” I’ve had this and it’s like having crisps in your sandwich, surprisingly tasty.” While a third added: “It’s banging, I had it today.” A fourth said they’ll ‘definitely’ be sampling the sarnie soon.
However, many shoppers were put off by the idea of having cold chips in a sandwich and feared they’d go ‘soggy’. “Just because you can, doesn’t mean that you should,” snubbed one person. “That looks rank,” added another – while a third wrote: “Not for me.”

“We think it could go on to become a breakfast classic,” Tesco’s Sandwich Creator Sarah Bryer said. “We know how well loved the chip butty is with the nation.
“Plus, we have seen a massive surge of people admitting their guilty pleasure of a crisp sandwich on social media, combined with British pub favourite ham, egg and chips. The mini salt and vinegar fries give a crunch to the Beechwood smoked ham and chunky, rich, egg mayonnaise.”
