When it comes to food shopping sometimes we venture into the supermarket with a completely blank mind about what to buy. Given that food bills have soared due to inflation and the cost of living crisis, it’s hardly surprising that Brits are being more cautious with their shopping choices.

However, one food essential found in UK households is potatoes. Not only is this root vegetable incredibly versatile, but you can also prepare it in numerous different ways.

You can get excellent value for money with a bag of the veg lasting quite a considerable time.

But if you’re like us and find it challenging to work through a bag before they begin going soft and sprouting, then Tesco has a message for you, reports the Express.

The supermarket giant has issued guidance to prevent food waste, particularly with potatoes.

Whilst some people can effortlessly work through a bag of potatoes when preparing a roast dinner for the family, some of us find it difficult and they can sit around for a week.

Nevertheless, Tesco has revealed what you need to do to prevent binning them and allowing them to go to waste.

According to its website, “potatoes last well in a dark, cool cupboard, but if you’ve got too many to use before they start to sprout, the freezer is a good saviour”.

“Peel, roughly chop and blanch until just cooked, then spread out on a tray so they’re not touching.

“Freeze until solid, then tip into a freezer bag – roasties ready to go!”.

The supermarket also states that this tip can apply to other food and drink items including bread, eggs, fruit, certain cheese and even wine.

So, if you’re hoping to reduce food waste this tip will definitely save you some cash in the long run.

Even better it will prevent the item from going to waste.
