A photo of a Tesco ready meal has sparked debate on social media as users try to guess ‘what region of Italy it is from’ – while others claim their Italian friends have been left appalled
Italy is known for its outstanding pasta dishes – whether it’s a classic carbonara, spaghetti bolognese, lasagna or a simple pasta pomodoro.
But some Tesco shoppers say the supermarket has ‘disgraced’ the country’s famous cuisine with a ready meal that claims to be a “taste of Italy” despite being rather untraditional.
The pepperoni pasta bake has been blasted online as Reddit users question: “What region of Italy is this taste from?” In response, one user joked: “I asked my Italian friend and he just shouted at me in Italian then hung up on me. So I’m none the wiser and still unable to offer any assistance.”
Another user added: “The one where all the grandmothers have grown wheels and turned into bikes.” A third user said: “Little Italy in Birmingham.” One more user added: “The one where they’d punch you in the face for serving them that.”
Others joked it was likely from some lesser-known parts of the stunning nation. One wrote: “Tescany,” while another joked: “Sh**aly.” Others suggested it came from closer to home, with one writing: “Croydon,” while another suggested: “Milton Keynes.”
Tesco boasts an array of tasty ready meals and diners can enjoy a swathe of cuisines, from Italian to Indian and Chinese to traditional British fare – even bangers and mash are on the menu. Diners with dietary requirements can even pick up an array of vegetarian, vegan, calorie-controlled and gluten-free options.
According to he retailer’s website, the pepperoni pasta bake can be bought in two different sizes – 400g or 750g, sold at £3.25 or £4.25 respectively. Those with a Clubcard can scoop up the 400g dish along with two other items for just £7.50, while the 750g portion costs just £3 with the card.
The Mirror has contacted Tesco for more information.
