One influencer who shares tips on how to ‘live well for less money’ with her 126,000 followers on Instagram was left gobsmacked by how much the price of some things had gone up in supermarkets lately
Many people have noticed prices start to creep up when they do their food shop in supermarkets each week as the cost of living crisis continues in the UK. However, one woman has shared how some supermarket items are so expensive now that she has just stopped buying them.
Charlotte Deering, known as @themoneyferret on Instagram, often shares tips on how to ‘live well for less’ with her 126,000 followers on Instagram. However, the money-saving enthusiast told her fans in a recent reel that she was left shocked by just how much the price of some things had gone up in supermarkets.
The start of the video showed Charlotte walking around Tesco as overlay text read: “A food or drink item you’ve stopped buying because the price kept going up…”
She was then heard saying in the voiceover: “Name a food or drink item you’ve completely stopped buying because the price kept going up.”
Charlotte then focused on a jar of Kenco coffee, which was on sale for £8.35. She asked: “Sorry, but when did Kenco coffee cost £8.35? I remember buying this when it was like £3-something and I thought it was expensive then. It’s just complete madness.” The influencer also pointed out a refill for the coffee was £5.25
She then showed it was a similar situation with Nescafe coffee, with a jar of the original version costing £7.25. Tesco had proudly added a label to show the coffee was ‘priced matched to Aldi too’, which is known for its low prices.
Charlotte added: “Every time I’m going to the supermarket, I’m getting more and more shocked by the prices…£7.25 for Nescafe coffee and £5.35 for a refill. What in the world is going on here?
And it wasn’t just coffee Charlotte was left shocked over, as she was also stunned that Tesco’s own Extra Virgin Olive Oil was £5.55 for a smaller botle and £7 for a larger bottle. “I mean no way I was paying that,” she said.
In the condiments aisle, she also noticed that Heinz Tomato Ketchup was £3.65. Again she echoed: “No way was I paying that.”
She said she felt the same about the Hellmann’s Light Mayo, which was £3.75 for a jar. “I’ve actually seen this going for upwards of £5,” she said.
In the same aisle, Charlotte noticed the price of Bisto gravy. She said: “I do love Bisto gravy, but would I pay £3.95 for 300g of it? Absolutely not.”
However, that’s not the product that stunned her most, as she continued: “I thought all that was shocking until I saw that they’re charging £4.25 for Kellogg’s cereal.”
She also admitted she was ‘glad she didn’t look at the mince’, as she said she’d heard that beef mince is now on sale in the store for £7.19 for 750g.”
The influencer concluded by saying: “I honestly dread going food shopping now, but let me know what you think.”
Following up in the caption, she also wrote: “All i do when I go round the supermarkets now is go, ‘How much?’, or, ‘I’m not paying that’, it’s ridiculous!
“And even when you buy like two things it still comes up to £50.”
Fellow shoppers seemed to resonate with the post, as it racked up thousands of likes.
One person said: “You sound like me, don’t get me started. My husband likes the nice olive oil, Lurpack, nice eggs etc, can easily spend like £25 on those three things!”
While another added: “Beef mince used to be our go to meat but it’s gotten ap expensive that it’s not an option most weeks.”
A third chimed in: “I work in a supermarket and it breaks my heart to see these prices go up every week.”
Another person shared their cost-saving hack as they wrote: “When we go to Spain to see family, we bring back bottles of olive oil rather than wine now.”
While others said they’ve now converted to supermarket’s own-brand products to save money.
One person said: “I buy Tesco version of ketchup and mayo, Tesco finest gravy (or M&S gravy) and I also try the Tesco own stuffing.”
While another added: “M&S ketchup £1 is excellent.”
Tesco has been contacted for comment.
