Tesco is updating its price reduction policy on select items after a certain time each day. Starting at 7pm, the supermarket giant slashes prices on various bakery products in stores nationwide as part of their initiative to “prevent good food from going to waste”.

Customers perusing the bakery section may notice signs declaring: “From 7pm, our loose bakery products are reduced by 50 per cent”. This half-price promotional strategy has been picked up and circulated by eagle-eyed deal hunters on social platforms, with promos popping up on pages like Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK on Facebook.

The popular bargain-hunting page informed its 64k fans with a message stating: “Spotted this in my local Tesco Express – not sure if all stores, but maybe useful to someone.” This announcement was paired with a snapshot showing pastries alongside ‘7pm’ labels mentioning: “Excludes bread and gingerbread”.

With the cost-of-living crunch pinching pockets all over the UK, these cuts could offer some respite for shoppers, reports Yorkshire Live. Customers have reacted positively on Facebook, one remarking: “Good if you have a Tesco within walking distance!”

Another noted a recent change, saying: “Used to be 5pm but they changed it to 7pm to fit in line with reductions on fridge and other bakery items.”

Upon contacting Tesco for comment, the company’s representative confirmed: “Markdowns on fresh products continue to be popular and help to prevent good food from going to waste.” They further explained that unsold food is redistributed to various causes, noting: “If we can’t sell food, we redistribute it to charities and community groups, and offer it to colleagues for free.”

The spokesperson clarified that the decision to slash prices on bakery items is a daily measure to mitigate food waste. “Whilst this is generally at around 7pm, timings can vary by store,” they informed. At Tesco, customers can indulge in an array of freshly-baked delights available from the bakery section, offered fresh each day.

The shop’s delectable all-butter croissants come in a trio of flavours – plain, chocolate, and almond – normally priced at £1.20, but with the evening 50 per cent markdown, savvy buyers can snag one for just 60p. This strategy ties into Tesco’s recent move where select Tesco Express outlets are trialling giving away unsold items adorned with yellow stickers, entirely free of charge post-9.30pm in a concerted effort to curb food wastage.

These yellow-stickered items can be conveniently processed at the self-service tills. The scheme seeks to reduce surplus food while supporting those in need. In order to claim your complimentary groceries, you mustn’t forget to drop by an involved Tesco Express after 9.30pm.

Simply scan the items featuring the distinctive yellow sticker at one of the self-service checkouts and voilaÌ€ – you’re welcome to take the free food back home.
