A number of bus lanes in Redbridge will now only operate at peak hours amid outcry from residents. Transport for London (TfL) proposed using part of Woodford Avenue 24 hours a day, reducing the stretch between Keswick Gardens and Clayhall Avenue to single-line traffic.
Lobbying from those in the Ilford neighbourhood led to a reduction in the operating times, with Redbridge Council and TfL officials reaching a compromise after multiple meetings. The bus lanes will be active Monday – Friday, between 7-10am and 4-7pm, and can be used by buses, cyclists, motorcyclists, Dial-a-Ride vehicles, and emergency vehicles.
Outside of these hours, including weekends, the lanes will be open to all traffic. TfL is updating signage and road markings starting this Saturday, ahead of the official launch on Monday, August 18.
In a statement, Redbridge Council said the revised hours aim to balance the needs of public transport users with those of the wider community”. The authority’s leader, Councillor Kam Rai, confirmed he is pleased with the outcome.
He added: “As a local resident, I understand the impact road network changes can have on our neighbours. We’re committed to ensuring people can go about their busy lives with minimal disruption.
“Local residents raised concerns about the initial installation and operating times of the bus lane, and we listened. That’s why we met with TfL on behalf of Redbridge residents to discuss improvements.”
TfL has already adjusted signal timings at the Clayhall Avenue junction in support of the bus priority scheme. These changes allow more right-turning vehicles to pass through on green and help reduce queuing.
Any residents with questions or concerns regarding the changes are urged to contact TfL directly on 0343 222 1234.
