The UK is waiting with bated breath to find out who will be leading the country from July 4. Many MPs will be trying to hold onto their seat, but some have decided to call it a day and not stand again at the General Election.

As a result, some constituencies are guaranteed to have a new person speak for them in Parliament. Seven Conservatives and six Labour politicians have ruled themselves out in London. Nationally, the number of MPs standing down has surpassed the 1997 total, before Labour won a landslide victory under the leadership of Tony Blair.

Included in the Tories moving to pastures new is Mike Freer, whose constituency office suffered fire damage in December. He told MyLondon in May that he has received death threats and is lucky to be alive after a near miss with the killer of Sir David Amess.

Sir Bob Neill represented Bromley and Chislehurst between 1997 and 2024. Paul Scully, who was MP for Sutton and Cheam, served not long ago as the Minister for London.

Looking to Labour, Dame Harriet Harman, an MP in the capital since 1974, was the Mother of the House until Parliament’s dissolution. Dame Margaret Hodge, who represented Barking between 1983 and 2024, has also stood down.
