A third of Brits (33%) are planning both a foreign holiday and a UK staycation this summer, according to a survey.

The research, conducted for American Express, found that holidaymakers anticipate spending an average of £2,804 on international trips across the summer. Almost two in five (39%) plan to spend more on overseas holidays this summer than they did last year.

Additionally, 39% of those heading abroad over the summer aim to embark on at least two international trips before September ends. Those opting for staycations expect to shell out an average of £1,754 on their UK-based holidays this summer, with a third (33%) intending to spend more on domestic holidays compared to last summer.

Younger travellers, particularly those aged between 18 and 34, are more likely to explore UK tourist spots, with 63% planning a staycation this summer. City breaks are proving popular among those planning a staycation, with London, Manchester and Edinburgh being top choices.

More broadly, Wales, Cornwall, the Lake District and Devon were also frequently mentioned by those planning a staycation. Word-of-mouth recommendations have inspired some UK-based holidays, with 41% influenced by family and friends and 32% considering online reviews. Local weather was also a deciding factor for 31% of people when planning their staycations.

According to an Opinium survey of 2,000 Brits, two-fifths (39%) of those under 35 admitted that social media plays a role in their decision-making when it comes to picking a staycation.
