Thousands of homes could be left without electricity and heating

Thousands of UK households are at risk of losing heating and hot water later this month, when their meter technology will be switched off. Radio Teleswitching System (RTS) meters will likely stop working properly from Monday, June 30.

While most homes have standard or smart meters, which won’t be affected, some 300,000 households are believed to have the old-style RTS meters. Energy UK said these meters may turn on and off at the wrong times, with some customers at risk of having their heating stuck – either on or off – constantly.

Customers left with RTS meters after the shutdown would be in an “unprecedented situation”, it added. Martin Lewis’ Money Saving Expert (MSE) said RTS is “now reaching the end of its natural life” and that those with these meters could see incorrect charges from their supplier after the shutdown.

MSE also said people will need to replace their RTS meters before the shutdown, advising those who think they have one to contact their suppliers as quickly as possible.

An article adds: “Be aware of scams – meter replacement is free, so your supplier will never ask you to provide payment details or make any payment when booking an appointment. Most RTS meter replacements are straightforward and take around two hours to complete.”
