Noodle, Du Plessis, Leo and more are all longing to be part of a loving family home
Have you considered adopting a pet this Global Adoption Weekend (October 3-5)? Mars, one of the top pet food companies in the world, is teaming up with shelters all over the UK—including The Mayhew Animal Home in London—to help hundreds of pets find loving families and their forever homes.
Right now, over 139,000 cats and dogs are in shelters across the UK. Plus, with 87% of pet owners in the UK saying that pets improve their happiness, Mars is on a mission to help more people experience the joy of adoption, which can change the lives of both the pet and the owner.

What should I do if I want to adopt?
Dr Tammie King, Pet Behaviourist from Mars Petcare’s Waltham Petcare Science Institute says: “Choosing adoption is one of the most meaningful ways to make a lasting difference for both you and your future pet. It gives animals a safe, happy home while bringing joy and companionship to their new families.
“But it is also a big decision that requires care. That’s why responsible pet ownership is so important, ensuring future owners are willing and prepared for the responsibilities that come with a new pet (in addition to the exciting benefits of adding a new furry member to your family!)”
She added: “A cute animal is not a good enough reason to adopt. Avoid impulsive decisions, as it’s important to take potential pet ownership seriously and ensure it’s the right thing for you (and the pet). Find out more about the type of pet you want. Talk to others who have them, meet them and spend time with them to really understand if this is the pet for you.
“If it’s a particular breed or breed type you want, learn more about them – their characteristics and potential health issues. Shelter staff will often have lots of information on surrendered pets, including medical and behavioural history and are experts in carefully finding the right match between adopters and pets.
“Think about additional costs, how much time you spend at home, the space you have, the pet-friendly facilities nearby, and the spare time you can give to enjoy being with your new four-legged friend. Consider when is the best time to get your new companion. It’s important to lay down proper training foundations to help new pets adjust to your lifestyle and get settled into their new home and routine.” You can find more adoption education and support through Mars’ Pets and Wellbeing hub.
