Three teenage girls, aged 15, 16 and 17, have pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of a 75-year-old man in Islington. Fredi Rivero was pushed, shoved, kicked and punched before dying in hospital on February 27 this year.
Mr Rivero, a Bolivian national, was near a bus stop when the defendants got off a bus and surrounded him before he was attacked. One of the girls filmed the incident on her mobile phone, heard Highbury Corner Youth Court.
Police found Fredi with serious head injuries on Seven Sisters Road on Thursday, February 27 after they were called to reports of an assault on the bus stop. He died a day later in hospital from his injuries.
The three girls, who can’t be named because of their age, were arrested shortly after the assault and officers found one of them had filmed the unprovoked attack on her phone. The girls were charged with manslaughter on Saturday, March 1, and they are due to be sentenced at the Old Bailey in September.
Detective Inspector Devan Taylor, Specialist Crime said: “Mr Rivero was a much-loved family man who died in a truly tragic incident. I know how much his death has impacted those close to him and the wider community.
“I would like to offer my heart-felt sympathy to Mr Rivero’s family for their loss and express my admiration for the dignity they have shown throughout the investigation. I also wish to thank the members of public who went to Mr Rivero’s aid as he lay injured.
“The young defendants have now accepted they were responsible for the killing of Mr Rivero, in what was a senseless and completely out of the blue attack on a lone elderly man. The age of the defendants adds to the devastating nature of this incident and they will now have to deal with the enormity of their actions.”
