Time to upgrade your Samsung Galaxy phone? Crucial test uncovers big reason to switch
If you love streaming Netflix, playing games online and listening to music on the move, you might be best taking a look at the new Galaxy S24. This device, which launched earlier this year, has just been crowned the winner in the latest 5G speed results with it not only beating the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S23 but also the very latest iPhone 15.
The tests were performed by the team at Ookla with the S24 recording an average download rate of 156Mbps when connected to the UK’s 5G network. Coming second was the iPhone 15 with a speed of 138Mbps followed by the S23 (133Mbps) and the the S22 (120Mbps).
As a quick guide, those who have the S24 in their pocket would be able to download an HD movie 3 minutes and 40 seconds – that’s compared to almost 5 minutes using the Galaxy S22.
Ookla hasn’t revealed where its tests were taken or which mobile network it used to perform the speed review but it has shown that some devices are faster than others.
“The Samsung Galaxy S24 family showed a statistically significant lead for median 5G download speeds in seven out of 15 countries in this study,” Ookla confirmed. “On the other hand, the Apple iPhone 15 family posted the fastest 5G speeds in only one country. It’s worth noting, however, that speed differences between Galaxy S24 devices and iPhone 15’s were relatively minor in some of the countries analysed.”
Before you think about switching to 5G do some research as some networks limit the top speed depending on how much you pay – that means it might not actually be any faster than your current SIM.
If you are on an older 4G contract it’s likely that you’ll still have free European roaming – the moment you switch you may well be charged extra when heading to places such as Spain, France and Italy.
A fee of over £2 per day is added by some networks meaning a family of four all wanting their phones connected on a two-week holiday will pay over £100 for the privilege.
