Taylor Swift is about to make a musical comeback with the release of her 12th studio album, titled The Life of a Showgirl. Some of the lyrics have already been teased, sparking some controversy.

Taylor Swift isn’t a stranger when it comes to dropping little Easter eggs ahead of her album, and she has even teased snippets of lyrics from some of her new songs. The country-pop star is set to release her 12th studio album, titled The Life of a Showgirl, on October 3.

After almost a year, Taylor Swift is making a comeback to the music scene, releasing a total of 12 new songs, with only one collaboration, and it being none other than her supporting act and now a superstar herself, Sabrina Carpenter.

Ahead of its release, a Spotify experience took place in New York City on September 30, where Swifties got a glimpse of potential lyrics from some of the songs. It did add to fans’ excitement, but it also appeared to spark some controversy.

Fans at the event spotted the first lyric from the album, written in a mirror with a peachy-orange coloured lipstick, which said, “Often it doesn’t feel so glamorous to be me.”

Soon after, the lyrics were spotted on billboards in New York, specifically Times Square, as well as in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Some other lyrics revealed from the album are: “Everyone’s unbothered til they’re not”, “They don’t make loyalty like they used to”, “Keep it 100”, “You wanna take a skate on the ice inside my veins?”, and “I heard you calling”.

Naturally, the leaked lyrics quickly went viral on social media. The context of the lyrics and the associated tracks remain unknown, but this didn’t stop netizens from sharing their thoughts.

While some fans played detective, others accused the singer of being “tone deaf” and “cosplaying the struggle” of being super rich and the biggest pop star of today’s generation.

“Taylor really said being the highest-paid popstar alive feels ‘not so glamorous’… yeah I bet flying private to your 18th mansion must be rough,” a netizen commented. Another one wrote: “Taylor Swift really cosplaying the struggle like her Eras Tour grossed less than $1k. What an odd thing to say considering what most people are going through today.”

One fan came to her defence: “Those swifties are attacking anyone who dates theorise that the life of a showgirl might have some sad songs & lyrics… well, ‘often it doesn’t feel so glamorous to be me’ isn’t exactly the happiest line.”

One thing that’s for sure about Taylor Swift is that she thrives on controversy. The 14-time Grammy winner was officially declared a billionaire in 2024, thanks to the success and record-breaking Eras Tour, which grossed over $2 billion (£1.7 billion). According to Forbes, Taylor has an estimated net worth of $1.6 billion (£1.3 billion).
