A new study from InsureandGo has revealed the cities that tourists are most desperate to go back to and the number one city is in the UK

A new study has revealed the cities that tourists itch to go back to and taking the number one spot is a city in the UK.

The team at InsureandGo used online reviews to discover the cities that tourists are most desperate to return to. From America to France, the list features cities in countries far and wide with the number one destination being right here in the UK.

City breaks offer the perfect opportunity for tourists to escape their lives back home for a few days. Most city breaks can fit into a weekend and therefore usually don’t require any time to be taken off work. Check out the list to see if any of the cities you have visited, feature.

10. Madrid, Spain

Scraping the 10th place was the Spanish capital, Madrid. One of Europe’s megacities, Madrid has a wealth of cultural, historical and leisure attractions. Due to its reputation for being a safe city, Madrid attracts millions each year from families to solo travellers. Some of its top attractions include art galleries, such as Museo Nacional del Prado and the Reina Sofia, as well as the capital’s pretty Retiro Park.

9. Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico City was one of the most popular cities for travellers to return to outside of Europe. The Mexican capital is known for its colourful architecture and the Museo Frida Kahlo. It is also located next to an active volcano — Popocatépetl.

Berlin in Germany also left many people wishing to return. The funky city is known for Museum Island, the Berlin Wall Memorial and its quirky nightlife. One of the best and most popular times of year to visit the city is around Christmas, when the city hosts many markets.

6. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam just missed out on a top-five spot. Despite having one of the world’s most expensive tourist taxes, Amsterdam left many tourists wanting more. Although Venice in Italy is often thought of when wanting to see canals, Amsterdam has more — offering the perfect alternative.

5. Tokyo, Japan

The bustling Japanese capital has some of the world’s best food, incredible shopping and picturesque temple complexes. Despite the lengthy flight for British tourists, many still wish to venture back.

4. Rome, Italy

Rome has some of the world’s most incredible historic landmarks, including the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain. There is no surprise that many want to return to this culturally and historically rich city.

New York made the top three. The Big Apple is perhaps the world’s most iconic city and has an endless amount of places to visit and things to do. Home to most of the famous architect Antoni Gaudi’s buildings, Barcelona has long been loved for its vibrant culture and dramatic buildings and parks. It was the most popular city in Spain with returning travellers, beating Madrid to the country’s top spot. The coastal city’s relaxed lifestyle perfectly mixes the metropolis and beach to form the ideal city destination.

2. Paris, France

The ‘City of Love’ came in second place. Its most iconic attractions include the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, although it has many smaller spots worth exploring too. Its food scene must not be forgotten either, and thanks to the popular Netflix series Emily in Paris, more travellers want to visit Paris now more than ever.

1. London, UK

Taking the top spot was the capital of the UK! With over 190 museums, more than 850 art galleries and more than 22,000 pubs and restaurants, it’s no surprise that tourists want to come back. The city has enough to explore to warrant many returning trips.
