The latest list of London’s baby-naming trends has just landed, courtesy of the Office for National Statistics. The fresh stats reflect the names chosen by parents two years ago, with some new names making a fresh entry to the top ten.

For those little Londoners born in 2022, Amelia has taken the crown as the most popular name for girls, with a total of 428 newborns given the name. Olivia, which was the top choice the previous year, was a close second with 425 babies in the capital given the name, while other top picks for girls included Sofia (387 babies), Maya (359), and Mia (335).

On the boys’ side, Muhammad continues to be the favourite name in London, with 741 babies sharing the name. Following Muhammad were Noah (695), Leo (521), Adam (435), and Oliver (363).

As for the rest of the UK, James Tucker, head of health analysis at the ONS, shared: “Noah was the most popular name for boys in 2022, for the second year in a row, having replaced Oliver at the top in 2021.” He further noted that Muhammad had climbed up the ranks from fifth to second place since 2021, while George stayed steady in third, Oliver slipped to fourth, and Leo nudged up to fifth.

As for the girls, the top four names remained consistent with the previous year, with Olivia, Amelia, Isla, and Ava leading the pack, and Lily jumping up to claim the fifth spot. Tucker also highlighted some newcomers to the top 10 lists: “Theodore, Theo and Freddie are three new entries into the top 10 boys’ names in 2022. Isabella is the only new entry into the girls’ top 10.”
