Traitors host Claudia Winkleman honoured with MBE at Windsor Castle

The TV star received her MBE for services to broadcasting

TV personality Claudia Winkleman beamed as she was awarded her MBE by King Charles at Windsor Castle today (Tuesday, December 9). The 53-year-old, along with her Strictly Come Dancing co-host Tess Daly, were both awarded MBEs in the King’s Birthday Honours for their contributions to broadcasting.

The duo announced last month that they will be stepping down from the show, having presented it together since 2014. Their final appearance will be during the Christmas special, scheduled to air on December 25. Last week, the BBC confirmed that The Traitors will make a comeback on New Year’s Day.

Winkleman will once again head to the Scottish Highlands to host the show, where a fresh group of loyal civilians will try to identify the treacherous traitors before the prize money is taken away.

The inaugural series of Celebrity Traitors, which aired this autumn, was a cultural phenomenon and a ratings success for the BBC. Comedian Alan Carr emerged victorious, beating faithful historian David Olusoga and actor Nick Mohammed.

Former cabinet minister Dame Penny Mordaunt, who played a significant role during the King’s coronation in 2023, will also be present at the Castle on Tuesday. She was honoured as a dame for her political and public service.

Her prominence was further elevated by her role as Lord President of the Council during the coronation ceremony. Donned in a bespoke teal ensemble with a matching cape, and a headband adorned with gold feather embroidery, she had the honour of carrying the Sword of State and presenting the Jewelled Sword of Offering to the King – marking the first time a woman has performed this duty.

Alison Madgin, 60, and her daughter Carly Barrett, 34, are also set to be awarded MBEs, for their contributions to the prevention of knife crime.

Samantha Madgin, Ms Madgin’s daughter, was a new mum at just 18 when she tragically lost her life to a stabbing incident in Wallsend in 2007. Her baby boy was only 68 days old at the time of her death.

In 2019, Ms Madgin and Ms Barrett established Samantha’s Legacy, a community interest company. Since then, they have been delivering talks to youngsters across the north east of England, educating them about the perils of carrying knives.

Former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Jeremy Hunt, is set to officially receive his knighthood for political and public service, an honour he shares with ex-Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, bestowed upon them in Rishi Sunak’s resignation honours.
