Escaping the hustle and bustle of the city is needed, especially during the summer months. As many Brits look forward to hopping on the plane and flying away, a good rest beforehand is key for a good start. Ideally, you’d want to relax and get a good sleep before arriving at your destination, but that’s not always the case.

Unless you’re flying on business or first class, a good sleep on the plane isn’t always possible. Being stuck in the same position for hours trying to find the perfect position can be daunting, but this hack is going to help you.

This is all thanks to TikTok user @travelwithell, a content creator who travels around the world sharing her experiences as a solo female traveller. Her 36-second video has over 69.000 views and over a thousand likes.

She demonstrated how she was able to sleep during her flight home from Bali. Despite being lucky enough to have the middle seat empty, it wasn’t enough, so she had to come up with a solution.

Hoping to travel comfortably and get a good sleep, Ell had this one idea that completely blew everyone’s mind. It didn’t take her much effort, and she just needed a blanket.

This ‘genius’ idea, as one comment described it, is the perfect method to stop your feet from slipping off while you’re sleeping. Using an extra blanket from the middle seat, Ell tried a knot and put it around the armrest. She wrote in the caption: “Then I put the rest of the blanket in, like a hammock cradle position around my feet so that they’re really secure and won’t move.”

Another user commented: “Think smart, not hard, my sister,” with a third one suggesting: “You can sorta do it with the seatbelt as well if your plane doesn’t come with a blanket.”

A ‘neighbour-free seat’ experience

Alternatively, travellers can actually book an entire row in economy. It can be done via the airline’s website at the time of purchase by selecting ‘neighbour-free seat’ or ‘seat plus’ for an extra fee. Not only does it provide passengers with the three seats available for their personal use, but it’s hundreds of pounds cheaper than upgrading to business or first class.

Nonetheless, paying for three seats on an airplane for a neighbour-free experience isn’t always guaranteed. During oversold flights, as well as in other circumstances, such as aircraft changes and operational need, airlines assign empty seats to waiting customers.
