Food content creator What Willy Cook shared his recipe for making what he calls the ‘world’s best’ tuna melts, with some non-negotiable ingredients you need to be adding.

Everyone adores a toastie, particularly during the colder months. A well-loved yet sometimes controversial option is a tuna melt, packed with savoury fish and tangy cheddar cheese.

But if you’ve grown tired of the usual tried-and-tested flavours, food content creator What Willy Cook has revealed the “world’s best” recipe for the toastie. Willy insisted there are some essential ingredients you must include, especially regarding the sauces.

In a recent TikTok video, Willy said: “I can confidently say that I make one of the best tuna mayo mixes that exists. So today I’m gonna put it in some bread and fry it in a pan and make the best tuna melt in the world.”

In his tuna mixture, Willy incorporates spring onion, coriander, jalapenos, gherkins and sundried tomatoes. But when it comes to the condiments, he goes “condimental”.

Instead of simply using mayo, Willy introduces two additional ingredients for an extra punch of flavour. You’ll need to include both harissa and wholegrain mustard in the blend, reports the Express.

Willy said: “When going condimental these are my essentials: harissa; mustard, very important; mayo.”

The cook highlighted that mustard genuinely transforms the modest toastie. He continued: “Mustard is essential in a tuna mayo. Every time I’ve not added mustard, the tuna mayo has not been as good.”

If you’re looking for a simple way to jazz up your next tuna melt for lunch, here’s what you’ll need for Willy’s recipe.

World’s Best Tuna Melt

Ingredients

  • Spring Onion
  • Coriander
  • Jalapenos
  • Gherkins
  • Sundried tomatoes
  • One tsp harissa
  • One tsp wholegrain mustard
  • Mayonnaise
  • Zest of half a lemon
  • One tin of tuna
  • Mature cheddar, grated and sliced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Two slices of white bread
  • Crunchy crisps

Method

Start by roughly chopping the spring onions, coriander, jalapenos, gherkins, and a small handful of sundried tomatoes. Place these in a bowl and add in the mayo, harissa and mustard.

Next, grate in the lemon zest. Add the tuna to the bowl and mix all of the ingredients together.

Now, add the cheese and give the mixture another good stir. Season with salt and pepper.

Take one slice of bread and place it in a cold pan, but not before spreading some more mayo on it. Flip the bread over so that the mayo-side is facing down.

Pile half of the tuna mix onto the other side of the bread. Layer thin slices of cheese on top, followed by some crisps.

Put the rest of the tuna mix on the other slice of bread and sandwich them together. Spread some mayo on the outside of the second slice as well.

Pan-fry the sandwich on medium heat for about five to six minutes before flipping it over. Use a chef’s press to apply pressure and reduce the heat to low for another five to six minutes.

Once the cheese has melted and the bread is nicely toasted, remove the sandwich from the heat and cut it in half. Now it’s ready to serve and enjoy.
