The ride-hailing app company announced the measure to help it meet its previous commitment that all Uber vehicles in the capital will be fully electric by the end of 2025

Uber is rolling out a generous £5,000 grant for its London drivers who make the switch to an electric vehicle (EV), as part of its ambitious plan to have all Uber cars in the capital go fully electric by 2025.

Drivers can use this grant either as a lump sum towards buying an EV or as weekly instalments for rental or rent-to-buy schemes. Additionally, Uber has negotiated discounts ranging from £12,000 to £17,000 on selected EVs exclusively for its drivers.

Currently, about a quarter of all Uber journey miles in London are covered by electric vehicles. With over 100,000 Uber vehicles across the UK and about half of them in London, the impact could be significant. Uber’s UK general manager, Andrew Brem, emphasized the urgency of the shift: “Now is the time to speed up on electrification, not slow down.”

He highlighted the need for ongoing support from policymakers and further investments across the industry to meet zero-emission targets and tackle air pollution. He added: “Uber drivers can be the catalyst for accelerating electrification across the transport sector but collaboration will be crucial to combat air pollution and work towards a more sustainable future.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed his commitment to London’s environmental goals: “I am determined to achieve my mission to make London a net-zero city by 2030, and the electrification of our buses and cars is absolutely key to this.”

He welcomed Uber’s initiative, noting it provides essential support for drivers transitioning from petrol or diesel vehicles to cleaner electric options. “Schemes like this are helping us to build a fairer, greener London for everyone.”
