A warning has been issued to motorists across the country – and it’s something drivers should be doing every time they park up, an expert says. It’s more crucial than ever to carry out a safety check
Drivers across the UK have been issued new advice regarding parking their vehicles in public spaces – being encouraged to undertake a quick safety check as part of their “matter of routine”.
It’s more crucial than ever to secure our cars and make pulling the handle a fast safety check, advise motoring organisations and road officials. In 2023 alone, England and Wales’ police forces logged a huge 363,321 car theft reports, indicating a dramatic increase in these offences. Drivers have now been reminded to always ensure their vehicles are locked and completely secure before walking away.
Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics, released later last year, disclosed that a significant 46 per cent of all thefts took place when vehicles were left unattended with unlocked doors, reports Birmingham Live. CEO of RegTransfers, Mark Trimbee, said: “It should become a habitual behaviour to lock up your car, even if you’re just refuelling or parking briefly in your driveway.
“You should never leave your vehicle running if you’re leaving the driver’s seat, and keep an eye out to make sure all windows and sunroofs are fully closed.” He urged motorists up and down the country to remain vigilant, especially considering their keys, stating: “When it comes to your keys, keep them out of sight and away from entry points to prevent theft through methods like key fishing.
“For keyless entry cars, it’s wise to reprogram keys when buying a second-hand car. Using signal-blocking pouches can prevent relay attacks, and investing in a steering wheel lock adds an extra layer of security – for both keyed and keyless cars. While you’re out on the road, keep your doors locked and maintain enough space to manoeuvre in traffic.
“Above all else, your personal safety is the most important thing – you should contact the police immediately if you feel threatened.”
