Vet Dr Julian Norton, from Pure Pet Food, has provided some intriguing insights into the behaviour of our canine companions, specifically explaining the reasons behind their nudging and nuzzling tendencies. Norton commented: “People sometimes ask why dogs nudge and nuzzle with their noses. Part of the reason is that dogs really feel part of the family and part of the tribe, and they’re trying to get attention by nuzzling you.”
“I think it’s a bit like when dogs come and lick us on our face or hands or that sort of thing. They’re just really wanting to be part of the family and get some attention.” This canine behaviour isn’t without its reasons. It’s a dog’s way of forging a sentimental connection with their owners.
Moreover, the vet highlighted the significance of licking in dog communication, noting that it often represents bonding or checking in emotionally with their owners. If your dog is giving your hand a lick or covering your face in kisses, it might be their way of showing empathy, effectively saying “I care”.
Dr Norton elaborates: “It’s quite endearing.” However, licking is only one part of the ways that dogs communicate and bond with us.
However, licking is only one part of the ways that dogs communicate and bond with us. Tail wagging is often perceived as a sign of excitement, but the meaning behind this behaviour is actually very dependent on it’s context.
Misinterpretations of tail waggings were clarified by the Express, suggesting that a wag can express anything from joy to nervousness, influenced by the wag’s speed, height, and stiffness. A loose, high wag typically conveys enthusiasm, whereas a slow and low wag can indicate anxiety or apprehension.
Dogs may also exhibit a “smile” when feeling playful or at ease, characterised by curling up the corners of their mouth, similar to a human smile.
When accompanied by a relaxed posture and wagging tail, this facial expression clearly indicates that your dog is feeling happy and unconcerned. By recognising these subtle signs, including licks, wags, and grins, you can strengthen your bond with your dog, fostering a deeper connection and a more joyful, self-assured pet.
